Apps I use everyday as a musician

Below are some of the apps that I used everyday as a musician and teacher. I have no affiliations with any of these but have used them for years. There are many more apps out there so I’d love to hear from people who use others I haven’t mentioned here!

  1. Cleartune

This is the tuning app that I use. While there are plenty of free apps out there for this, I paid a few dollars for Cleartune many years ago and now I swear by this tuner. Cleartune is one of the most accurate tuners available. It is even more accurate than most clip-on tuners that I have used in the past. Increments are in 10 cents and this has been helpful for everyday tuning but also for microtonal compositions.

2. Metronome

Similarly to tuning apps, there are an incredible numbers of metronomes available. I just use a simple free app. As long as it keeps a constant beat, I’m happy!

3. Forscore

I have mentioned Forscore previously in My iPad Pro changed my life. This is the app that I use for all of my music. All my scores are on here and I use my iPad on stage with the Bluetooth page turner. Along with the iPad, Forscore has meant that I no longer have to carry stacks and stacks of paper with me everywhere I go.

4. YouTube / Spotify

I have put these together under one heading because I use a variety of apps to listen to music and podcasts. What do you use?

I am sure to use more apps that perhaps I haven’t listed here. For example Staff Wars is a great app for my students to work on their music reading, but I don’t often use this every day. I’m open to new ideas so let me know what I’m missing!

All the best for now - see you in the next blog!
